Benijófar is a small inland town between Rojales and Formentera del Segura, with a compact centre, a genuine Spanish population and a steadily growing British and Irish community that came here for exactly the reasons you would expect: it is quieter than the coast, the properties are larger for the money, and it still feels like Spain.
The housing is mostly detached villas, bungalows and townhouses on decent plots, many with a pool, plus older town properties in the centre. Almost everything is tiled throughout, which pushes our work here onto sofas, armchairs, dining chairs, mattresses, rugs and hard-floor and grout treatment.
Grout is the underrated one inland. Older Spanish cement grout is porous, and decades of mopping drives soil into it rather than lifting it out. Steam at commercial temperature pulls it back without the acid cleaners that damage the grout itself, and the visual difference on a large tiled floor is usually the thing customers comment on most.
Benijófar runs hotter than the coast in summer and there is no sea breeze to move the air. Two consequences: agricultural and road dust settles heavily and constantly, and closed shuttered rooms in winter drive condensation into whatever is soft in them.
The pattern that works best here is an annual reset rather than a regular cleaner — a one-off deep clean from €140 for a two-bed or €195 for a three-bed, combined with the mattresses and sofas in the same visit at 10 per cent off. Most Benijófar households do their own week-to-week cleaning and just want the things they cannot do themselves done properly once a year.
Regular cleaning is available too at €18 an hour with a three-hour minimum, no contract and no tie-in.
