Los Balcones sits inland and slightly elevated, overlooking the pink salt lake, with the Torrevieja university hospital on its edge and the Via Park and Filton commercial centres serving it. The municipal boundary between Torrevieja and Orihuela actually runs through the middle of it — one side of a street is one town hall, the other side is another. For cleaning purposes it makes no difference at all; we cover the whole of it.
The area is villa-heavy with large plots and mature gardens, and the population is strongly permanent rather than seasonal. Proximity to the hospital makes it particularly popular with older residents, and a good share of our regular cleaning here is for people who simply do not want to be dragging a vacuum around a four-bedroom house any more.
The salt lake is worth understanding. Las Salinas is an active salt extraction lagoon, and in dry, windy conditions fine salt-laden particulate carries off it into the surrounding urbanisations. Combined with garden dust from the large plots, it means Los Balcones properties accumulate a gritty film on hard floors and terraces noticeably faster than properties closer to the sea.
Mains water across Torrevieja and Los Balcones is very hard — typically in the range of 42 to 50 French degrees, which is well into the “very hard” bracket and roughly two to three times what most of the UK is used to. Much of it is desalinated and heavily chlorinated.
Two consequences that people rarely connect to the water. First, fabrics washed at home in hard water hold mineral deposits and go stiff and grey over time, which is why towels here feel like cardboard within a year. Second, and this is the one that catches car owners, washing a car with mains water and letting it dry in the sun leaves white mineral rings etched into the clearcoat that will not polish out easily.

Most of our Los Balcones work is regular domestic cleaning: weekly or fortnightly, €18 an hour with a three-hour minimum, same cleaner each visit. Given the size of the properties here, three hours is usually the floor rather than the norm — a four-bedroom villa with a terrace is realistically a four to five hour visit.
We also do a steady amount of pre-sale deep cleaning in the area. Los Balcones and Los Altos have a healthy resale market and a properly deep-cleaned house photographs and views considerably better than one that has simply been tidied.
