San Fulgencio and its enormous La Marina urbanisation sit north of Guardamar, inland of the coast road, and between them they hold one of the highest proportions of foreign-born residents of any municipality in Spain. The community is overwhelmingly British, Irish, Dutch, German and Scandinavian, and it is permanent rather than seasonal — this is where people live, not where they holiday.
The housing is almost entirely bungalows, villas and townhouses on a grid of urbanisation streets, most with off-street parking and a good number with pools. Almost everything is tiled throughout, which puts our work onto sofas, armchairs, dining chairs, mattresses, rugs and hard-floor and grout treatment.
Permanent occupancy has one consistent effect: soiling accumulates evenly over years rather than in seasonal bursts, and nobody notices because the change is too gradual to register. A La Marina three-piece suite that has been in the same room for a decade is invariably far dirtier than the owner believes. The recovery tank at the end of the job makes that point better than we can.
La Marina beach and the pine belt behind it are a few minutes away, which is why a lot of people bought here, and it brings the same two problems Guardamar has. Fine beach sand walked in, which migrates to the base of carpet pile and abrades the fibres from below. And pine resin, which is not water-soluble, does not respond to ordinary cleaning, and needs a solvent-stage pre-treatment before extraction — on rugs, on outdoor furniture and most commonly on car paintwork, where it etches the clearcoat if left through a summer.
Because almost every property here has a driveway or porch parking, mobile valeting is straightforward. Our van brings its own water and power, so the car stays where it is. Full valet €55, interior steam clean €35, exterior wash €25.

Annually. In a permanently-occupied property the soiling builds evenly and gradually, so it is invisible to the owner until it is severe. Cleaning it yearly is also what makes the fabric last, because embedded grit abrades the fibres from inside.
