La Mata sits at the northern end of the Torrevieja municipality and has kept a village character the rest of the coast lost decades ago. The Blue Flag beach runs roughly two kilometres, the Parque Natural de La Mata backs onto it with pine-covered dunes and a walking network, and the lagoon behind is the greener of Torrevieja’s two salt lakes. It is quieter and noticeably more Spanish than Punta Prima or La Zenia.
That setting produces a cleaning problem you do not get further south: pine. Aleppo pine drops needles and resin, and both get walked into properties within a few hundred metres of the park. Resin is the difficult one — it is not water-soluble, so it does not respond to ordinary carpet cleaning or a wet cloth, and rubbing it spreads it into a wider dark smear. It needs a solvent-stage pre-treatment before extraction. If you have brown sticky spots on a hallway rug or on car seat fabric in La Mata, that is almost certainly what they are.
On top of that you have the ordinary coastal load: fine beach sand walked in from a very wide beach, and salt-laden humid air off the lagoon and the sea holding moisture in soft furnishings.
La Mata splits into three for us. The beachfront blocks along the paseo are compact, heavily let in summer, and take the full salt load — sofas and mattresses here hold moisture badly and are the main source of the shut-up smell owners notice in spring. The old village core behind has older Spanish-built apartments with tiled floors and rugs rather than fitted carpet. And the newer streets towards the natural park are bungalows and townhouses with more floor area and terraces.
Parking in the village core is genuinely difficult in summer, which is why mobile car valeting works well here — we bring our own water and power to wherever the car sits rather than you trying to find somewhere to take it.
