La Siesta is one of the longest-established urbanisations in Torrevieja, developed well before the coastal building boom, with its own commercial centre and a British and Irish community that in many cases goes back decades. The housing is predominantly bungalows and semi-detached properties on generous plots by Torrevieja standards.
Longevity is the defining feature of the work here. La Siesta households keep their furniture. We regularly clean three-piece suites that have been in the same room for fifteen or twenty years and mattresses that predate the euro. That is not a problem — older furniture was generally better made than what replaces it — but it does mean the accumulated load is enormous and the improvement is correspondingly dramatic.
It also means fibre-testing matters more. Older upholstery includes fabrics that are no longer common, some with backing or dye systems that do not tolerate aggressive extraction. We test every piece in an inconspicuous area before starting and switch to low-moisture steam where the fabric calls for it.
A significant share of our La Siesta work is regular domestic cleaning for people in their seventies and eighties who have lived here a long time and would rather not be pushing a vacuum around a three-bedroom bungalow any more. There is no shame in that and it is far and away the most useful thing we do.
€18 an hour, three-hour minimum, weekly or fortnightly, and the same person every visit. That consistency matters more with older clients than anybody else — a cleaner who knows the property notices when something is different, and knows where things go without asking every time.
Everything is done with steam and non-toxic products, so there is no bleach fume in a closed-up house and nothing that irritates a chest. That is not incidental. A lot of people came to this coast in the first place because of a respiratory condition.
